Ballarat Grammar & Trident Team Up



Ballarat Grammar, with the help of Trident Computer Services, recently completed a major upgrade of its servers, storage and backup systems. The server upgrade consisted of 7 x HP DL380G4 Servers with over 4TB of combined storage. Whilst a SAN was not deemed necessary at this stage, Head of Information Systems, Des Hardy was acutely aware of the importance of ensuring that the school’s IT systems
were fully protected in the event of failure. To this end Trident helped design a backup solution consisting of a dedicated HP ML110G2 1TB Storage Server and HP MSL6030 30-slot LTO3 Tape Library (24TB capacity)
operating across a dedicated backup LAN and NIC in each server. However, as too many of us have discovered, traditional backup solutions don’t always cope very well with a bare-metal recovery. The solution
for BGS was to install Symantec’s Live State Recovery (LSR) on all the servers. LSR takes periodic snapshots of the entire server’s hard disks and system “State” to the Backup Server. LSR enables a total system  recovery in minutes and hours, not hours and days, whilst the massive capacity of the tape library enables fully automated, secure off-line data protection.
